BACKGROUND:

Mr Aiden Jensen-Mahu is the founding member of Te Atawhai Puumanawa with his partner, Pare, providing the backbone to what the association is today and will be in the future. 

Aiden was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia and has gained extensive maaori performing arts knowledge and experience whilst performing with numerous successful kapa haka roopuu here in Melbourne and Sydney. He has since gone on to compete at both regional and national levels, competing at Te Matatini, the highest calibre for maaori performing arts in 2011, 2017 and 2019 representing Australia.

Aiden dedicates himself in changing the culture in Victoria by providing the standards of high excellence within maaori performing arts with his passion for kapa haka and community, which guides him to reach his high expectations in his endeavours, not only for himself, but the roopuu as well.

Aiden has immersed himself in the fruits of Taawhaki, and te ao maaori currently completing courses Pookaitahi tikanga, Pookaitahi tikanga – te reo, Poupou huia te reo- Te Hookairangi (cert 5), Te reo uukaipoo and Ngaa mana whakairo a Toi year 2 run by Te Whare Waananga o Awanuiarangi. 

Aiden remains driven and true to his beliefs and eagerly emphasises the importance of education and excellence within maaori performing arts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Year 1: Ngaa Mana Whakairo a Toi;
  • Level 4: Poupou Huia Te Reo;
  • Te Whare Tuu Taua – Introductory 10-week course;
  • Diploma: Criminal Justice;
  • Certificate I, II and III in Hospitality:
  • Certificate III in Warehouse operations.

BACKGROUND:

Pare Ariki Maree Rotana’s goals and aspirations are to pass on the teachings she has learned in Te Ao Maaori and Ngaa mahi kapahaka, and create a pathway here in Australia for her whaanau, children and future mokopuna to be surrounded by Te Reo Maaori, Ngaa tikanga Maaori, ka mutu ngaa aahuatanga katoa, Maoori. 

She hopes to inspire all indigenous people to learn about their culture, whatever that may be, to protect their tuaakiritanga and nurture it for their future generations. 

“Poipoia te kaakano kia puawai” 

She grew up in Raahui Pookeka in 1985, and went to kohanga reo and  Te Wharekura o Rakaumangamanga where she performed numurous times with the school in competitions, on the marae and at school till 15yo.

Spending 1yr at Queen Victoria in Auckland and competing in Polyfest, she then spent the next 2 tears at Church college of NZ where she toured  Hawke’s Bay in the arts of Pacific island dancing including Hawaiian, Tahitian, and Maaori.

In 2004 she moved to Australia with her whanau and joined Sydney Kapahaka group Te Hoe Ki Matangireia in 2006 where she, along with other kaihaka/performers from Aotearoa and Australia, performed at the Regionals Competitions and at the Chinese New Year in Hong Kong.

In 2017, Pare prepared for, and performed at the 2018 Australian Regional Competition with her group Te Hoe Ki Matangireia. With a very successful performance and overall campaign, they won the right to represent Australia and compete at Te Matatini Ki te ao in 2019 in New Zealand.

Having moved to Melbourne in 2020, she has since become and supported the creation of Te Atawhai Puumanawa, and is now the current tutor, Female leader, and their group guitarist.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2021 – Helped with the establishment of Te Atawhai Puumanawa with partner Aiden
  • 2021 – Completed level 4 & 5 in Te Reo Maaori through Te Waananga o Raukawa
  • 2022 – Reo Teacher for Level 2 Te Reo Kakaho
  • 2023 – Studying BMPA Bachelors of Maori Performing arts
